Critical infrastructures – risks, protection and resilience
Daily life in industrialized nations such as Germany now functions solely on the basis of a tightly-knit network of complex, interwoven infrastructures. These have become vulnerable as a result of their increasing interconnectedness, and a breakdown could have dramatic consequences: after all, cyberwarfare – like terrorism – threatens the very fabric of our lives. Furthermore, the number of worrying attacks on critical infrastructures is rising at breathtaking speed. Are industry, politics and private households in Germany even remotely able to counter such threats and prevent a blackout?
At the "Metzler meets Fraunhofer" conference in February 2017, on the subject of "Critical Infrastructures – Risks, Protection and Resilience", Prof. Dr. Jürgen Beyerer, head of the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB), and Dr. Johannes Reich, personally liable partner of Metzler Bank and responsible for the core business field Corporate Finance and the Information Technology division, discussed the issues. Does data make us healthy? How big data is changing the healthcare market
Data is a valuable resource in the 21st century. In the past, data was collected for a specific purpose. Big data goes beyond that: huge amounts of data are generated and stored. With the aid of self-learning computer programs, different databases can be linked and searched for patterns of behaviour and correlations.
The opportunities, risks and possible side-effects of big data in the healthcare sector are enormous. Professor Stefan Wrobel, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS), and Dr. Johannes Reich, personally liable partner of Metzler Bank, who is responsible for Metzler’s Corporate Finance and IT divisions, discussed big data in the healthcare market at the joint “Metzler meets Fraunhofer” discussion platform in June 2016. The cars on Germany’s roads will most likely soon be equipped with an automatic traffic jam and highway pilot. A completely self-driving car appears to be in the not-too-distant future. This will leave its mark in various fields such as infrastructure, law, IT security and data protection. The auto industry seems to already be facing upheaval, as newcomers from other fields like Google or IT companies have pushed into the market for car development and are competing with established manufacturers.
During a joint event “Metzler meets Fraunhofer“ in January of 2016, Professor Uwe Clausen (Managing Director of Transport and Logistics at the University of Dortmund, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, and Chairman of Fraunhofer Traffic Alliance) and Dr. Johannes Reich (personally liable partner of Metzler Bank and responsible for Metzler’s Corporate Finance and IT divisions) spoke on the topic of automated driving.
